Who Is This Child?

Pin It Now! It all started Friday night.  Avery did not want to go to bed.  She fussed during her feeding and when we put her in her crib she did not want to go to sleep.  Luckily, she didn't cry or anything, just kind of laid in her crib, talked to herself, and played with her seahorse and lamb.  It took her almost a half an hour to fall asleep.  Very unusual for her, she's usually asleep within 10 minutes or so.  However, that night she slept great and didn't wake up the next morning until about 7:10 (yep, that's right she dropped her night time feed almost 2 weeks ago, I didn't say anything cause I didn't want to jinx it).  The next day the same thing happened at her naps.  She's not always the best napper and it sometimes takes her longer to fall asleep for naps then bedtime, but it was worse then usual.  One nap it took her an hour to fall asleep!  But once again, no crying or fussing, just laying there, playing and talking.  I didn't worry too much about it, especially since she was still in a great mood when she was awake.  Things continued like this all weekend, having trouble falling asleep but sleeping well when she finally did.

Then Monday rolled around.  Naps continued as they had all weekend but then suddenly she got grouchy. Very grouchy!  Nothing I could do made her happy, she whined and cried all. the. time!  Ok, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but she whined and cried a lot.  She could go from being a happy baby to being a miserable one in the blink of an eye.  If I told her not to do something or took something away, you'd think it was the end of the world the way she cried.  And going out in public was the worst!  She usually loves going out and running errand with me.  Everyone always comments on what a happy baby she is.  Well, not this week.

And to make it worse, she has started waking up during the night again.  Ugh!  Monday night she woke up once about 4 am, not too bad but I was so enjoying being able to sleep all night.  Then Tuesday she woke up 3 times; 1 am, 3 am, and 6 am.  Made for a long night!  Last night Eric was such a sweetheart and slept out on the couch with the monitor so I could get some sleep (God I love that man!).  It was so nice!  However, she woke up 2 times last night, 1 am and 5 am.  I really hope this doesn't last too long!

I'm not sure what is going on with her.  Maybe teething, a growth spurt, close to walking, or there could be no reason at all, just typical baby crankiness.  Needless to say I am exhausted from it all.  Let's just say I have eaten a lot of chocolate!!

  1. Oh, my friend. You know I feel your pain. I'm so sorry. Nate has clearly been a bad influence on Avery. My money is the disturbances are from the walking. I think it took Nate 1-2 weeks to settle down from it - then of course he got a cold :( Good luck! Everyone says it will eventually pass. Enjoy your chocolate. I just ate a donut :(

  2. all kiddos go through those phases, nope that doesn't make it easier right now. you could always try a dose of tylenol before bed to see if it is teething that is waking her up.

  3. Hey Liz,

I hear you! Right now my daughter is going through a phase in which she thinks she doesn't need ANY nap. I knew the day would be coming soon when we would drop one of her two naps, but right now we are in this in between stage where she needs sleep but seems to think she can get by with only about 15-20 minutes for each nap.

You mentioned you dropped her night feeding a couple of weeks ago. Did it happen naturally or did you encourage it? I am still nursing as well and my 11 month old gets up at least once to eat. I'm so looking forward to a good night's rest!

  4. Costello goes in and out of this exact same thing...some days he's all about 3 hour naps..(LOVE these days), others he just likes to play in his crib for around 45 min talking to himself or his lil' animals. I guess they are a bit unpredictable.

Generally I can bank on if he doesn't nap well, he'll be going down earlier at night, which means up earlier in the morning. Good times. Hopefully your full night of rest will come soon.

  5. I remember these nights all too well. Hang in there, it does start to get better. But I don't think we EVER catch up on missed sleep, LOL.
    Have a great afternnon.

  6. Have you ever read anything about The Wonder Weeks? Here are a couple links. Check it out. Too bad they don't go past one year old. I could have used it. So many people say do this do that. Maybe it's just nature sometimes. Ya know? I found a little comfort in reading about these so called Wonder Weeks. ;)

  7. I hate it when they go through those weird things! My little guy does it also. We've finally gotten down to one nap a day... but sometimes I think I put him down too early and he's in there for forever and other times he goes down right away. I just never know. I wish there was some kind of nap genie or something. =)

    Good luck!

  8. I hate when they go through those rough patches! Could be teething if she is waking so much and grouchy.Hang in there!

  9. Thanks so much ladies! It's so nice knowing that we aren't the only ones going through it.

Amber, mmm, a donut sounds good!

Lori, we tried the Tylenol Wednesday night but she still got up. I am happy to say that last night she didn't get up. Who knows, the crazy ups and downs of baby sleep, it's crazy!

Holly, she dropped it naturally actually, we didn't do anything really. Her wakening/feeding started to get later and later. The next step was she would get up some nights and not others. And finally it just stopped completely. I'm so glad it happened that way, I was not looking forward to sleep training again!

Chelle, thanks for the link, I'll have to check it out.

    Thanks again everyone! : )

  10. Hi Liz, I think it might be teething. Lil' Lewie was going to bed and sleeping fine until the teeth started. Now, we still go through this phase every once in a while because the molars are coming in...You'll get a full night's rest again when it subsides. Take care of yourself, and keep on taking turns with your husband so that neither of you gets overly tired. Good luck :)

  11. Thanks Annette! That's what I was leaning towards but it's so nice having other mom's opinions.

  12. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm now following you thru GFC and entered your Nanny giveaway. Hopefully your daughter will work thru her little sleeping issues. We are about to give our youngest freedom and take the front off her crib. I'm sure I'll be experiencing some late night wake ups too.

  13. My little guy has been a fitful sleeper lately as well! I definitely know what you are going through. If that kid could talk he would have such a hefty piggy bank, as I will pay lots to just get some sleep.
