But I Signed "Please!"

In the last week or two Avery has gotten very good at signing the word "please", which makes me so happy, I love good manners!  At dinner she will sign "more please" when she wants more food, or "drink please" when she is thirsty.  When she wants a toy down from the top shelf she'll sign "please" and point, or when she wants us to pick her up she'll sign "up please."  It's going really well and when a new situation arises where "please" is appropriate she's catching on quickly.  It's wonderful (next up... thank you)!

However, she has also decided that if she signs "please," it means she gets it no matter what.  Sorry, Avery, just because you sign "please" it doesn't mean you can have a sip of my coffee, play with the kitchen knife, eat my flip flop, hold the glass jar of pickles at the grocery store, chew on the dogs' toy, or tear up the credit card bill.  And when I tell her no, she, of course, acts like it's the end of the world and I am the meanest mom in the world. She gets big tears in her eyes and her chin begins to quiver.  Such a drama queen!  When I taught, I had students that had that sense of entitlement attitude quite often when they would say please (not usually to the extreme that Avery takes it to) but I had no idea it started this early.  I mean really, Avery has known this sign for 2 weeks tops and she already thinks it can get her ANYTHING she wants.  It crazy how quickly they pick up on things and how they interpret the meaning!

  1. Wow, that is way too funny, but I can see it happening. I never taught Lil' Lewie how to sign...big mistake I regret now...but he does think he can get his way by whining or whimpering. Unfortunately, no can do...if I say no, it's no. They are little actors. My little boy is already ready for the stage!

  2. Hahaha. Aw, poor Avery! What's so bad about a little coffee while she plays with the knife ;) This is so cute. One of the interesting things about signing is that it can be harder to say no (at least for me) when you know exactly what they want. And a "please" on top makes it that much more difficult to set limits! We're working on "thank you" too :)

  3. Haha- I totally remember my oldest acting that way! Entitlement is a good word- I'm finding that my kids feel that way a lot! As I tell them- "Bad Habit!!"

  4. it is funny how they think that please is such a magical word. But think of how much better off she will be as you are teaching her now that she can't always get her way no matter how much she says please and gets upset

  8. Oh gosh girl, we are so in this phase right now! My son is just in this phase where he's like "but I say that I wanted it", like wanting it means that its going to happen every time. ugh!!! I wish there was a mute button because I have such a hard time just ignoring him when he gets like that. sigh, LOL. good luck fellow mommy in arms :)

  14. This made me laugh, b/c my daughter was the exact same way when she first learned to sign "please." We had such a positive reaction that she thought she would take things to the next level. And did not understand why, "please" did not get her whatever she wanted. It did pass. She has learned the appropriate times to use please, and we don't see it as much at other times. :)

  18. Ha! My son does that also! He was visiting my mom at her office one day and her co-workers were like "oooh... he is so polite for a toddler". ha ha... little did they know he just thinks that's how he gets EVERYTHING. It IS really hard to resist though, don't you think? =)
We are working on signing "thank you" also, but I made the mistake of teaching him to blow kisses when I would leave for work, and that is so similiar a movement.
    Good luck!

  20. Poor little girl! Lol. I can see my little guy doing something similar. He reaches his hand out when he wants something, but when I tell him no he gets extremely upset. It's for his own good though!
